    Story Retelling

A powerful comprehension activity where students orally retell stories using beginning, middle, and end structure, building understanding of narrative elements and oral language skills.

    Activity Overview

Story Retelling helps Grade 1 students demonstrate and deepen their understanding of stories by recounting them in their own words. After listening to or reading a story, students practice retelling the important parts in sequence, using key details about characters, setting, and events. This activity strengthens comprehension, vocabulary, memory, and oral language while building a foundation for written summaries later.

    📚🗣️

    Learning Outcomes

    • Retell stories including key details and events
    • Identify and describe characters, settings, and major events
    • Use sequence words: first, next, then, finally
    • Demonstrate understanding of story structure
    • Use complete sentences in oral retelling
    • Make connections between story events
    • Build vocabulary through story language

    Retelling Framework: Story Hand

Use the "Story Hand" to help students remember the five key elements of a story retelling:

    👍

    Thumb: Characters

    Who is in the story?

    👆

    Pointer: Setting

Where and when does it happen?

    🖕

    Middle: Problem

What is the problem or challenge?

    💍

    Ring: Events

    What happens? (Beginning, Middle, End)

    🤙

    Pinky: Solution

    How is the problem solved?

    Retelling Sentence Starters

    • Beginning: "Once upon a time..." / "In the beginning..." / "First..."
    • Middle: "Then..." / "Next..." / "After that..."
    • Problem: "The problem was..." / "But then..."
    • Solution: "So..." / "Finally..." / "At the end..."

    Implementation Steps

    1Read Aloud (10-15 minutes)

    • Choose a story with clear structure (beginning, middle, end)
    • Read the story aloud with expression
    • Pause occasionally to check understanding
    • Show illustrations and discuss key moments
    • Tell students they will retell the story afterward

    2Story Discussion (5 minutes)

    • Review story elements using the Story Hand
    • "Who are the characters?" "Where does it happen?"
    • "What was the problem?" "How did it get solved?"
    • Create a simple story map or picture sequence on the board
    • Highlight key vocabulary from the story

    3Model Retelling (3-5 minutes)

    • Teacher models a complete retelling
    • Use the Story Hand, touching each finger as you cover each element
    • Use sequence words: first, then, next, finally
    • Include key details and vocabulary from the story
    • Think aloud: "Let me remember what happened next..."

    4Partner Retelling (8-10 minutes)

    • Pair students up (mix abilities)
    • Partner A retells while Partner B listens
    • Partner B can prompt with Story Hand elements
    • Switch roles - Partner B retells
    • Teacher circulates to support and assess

    5Whole Group Sharing (5 minutes)

    • Select 1-2 volunteers to retell for the class
    • Class listens for all Story Hand elements
    • Give specific positive feedback
    • Discuss what made the retelling effective
    • Optional: Act out the story together

    Activity Variations

    Puppet Retelling

Students use puppets to act out and retell the story, giving voice to different characters.

    Picture Retelling

Draw 3-4 pictures of key events, then use pictures to guide oral retelling.

    Story Map Retelling

Complete a story map graphic organizer, then use it to support oral retelling.

    Drama Retelling

Groups act out the story with assigned roles while one student narrates.

    Differentiation Strategies

    For Students Who Excel

    • Include more details and dialogue
    • Compare to similar stories
    • Retell from different character's perspective
    • Write a brief retelling after oral practice

    For Students Who Need Support

    • Use picture cards as prompts
    • Focus on beginning, middle, end only
    • Allow retelling in Home Language first
    • Use familiar, simple stories
    • Provide sentence starters on cards

    Language Considerations

    • Use Caribbean folktales (Anansi stories)
    • Accept retelling in Home Language
    • Build vocabulary before reading
    • Provide visual supports for key vocabulary

    Retelling Rubric

    • Excellent: Includes all 5 Story Hand elements
    • Good: Includes 3-4 elements
