    ELO-1
    Sunlight and Its Effects

Observe and describe the effects of sunlight on different materials. Students compare the warming effects of sunlight on shaded and unshaded areas, test the effectiveness of shade structures, and design and build structures to provide shade and reduce heat from sunlight. They understand that sunlight warms Earth's surface.

    Students will:

Students will observe and describe how sunlight affects different materials, compare shaded and unshaded areas, and design solutions to reduce the warming effects of sunlight.

    Learning Outcomes:

    • SC_G1_ST2_1_S_002: Observe examples of how plants and/or animals use their external parts for survival, growth and to meet their needs.
    • SC_G1_ST2_1_S_003: Communicate properties of mimicked plants and animals by observing and describing.
    • SC_G1_ST2_1_S_004: Use simple materials to design a solution to a human problem using examples from the external parts of plants and or animals.
    • SC_G1_ST2_1_S_005: Construct a simple model of a gadget designed to solve the problem and test its effectiveness.
    Attitudes/Values
    • SC_G1_ST2_1_AV_001: Appreciate that the external parts of plants and animals have inspired technological designs.
    • SC_G1_ST2_1_AV_002: Demonstrate a continuing interest and more informed curiosity in the link between nature and technological design.
    • SC_G1_ST2_1_AV_003: Willingly participate in classroom discussions and group activities with peers.
    • SC_G1_ST2_1_AV_004: Show a respect for living things while making observations of any live animal or plant specimen.
    • SC_G1_ST2_1_AV_005: Observe all applicable safety measures when interacting with plant/animal specimens or using tools.
    • SC_G1_ST2_1_AV_006: Display sensitivity and offer assistance to peers who may have physical or learning challenges when conducting practical and group work.

    ELO-2
    Living Things and Their Environment

Understand the relationship between living things and their environment. Students observe and describe how living things get what they need to survive, recognize that humans are animals with similar needs, and identify the basic needs of plants (water, light, air, nutrients) and animals (food, water, air, shelter).

    Students will:

Students will identify and describe the basic needs of plants and animals, understand how living things obtain what they need from their surroundings, and recognize the connection between living things and their environment.

    Learning Outcomes:

    Knowledge
    • SC_G1_ST2_2_K_001: Define the terms: Protect, Signal, Offspring, Survive, Behaviour, Parents, Respond
    • SC_G1_ST2_2_K_002: Name and identify the offspring of some common animals.
    • SC_G1_ST2_2_K_003: Identify signals offspring make (crying, chirping, whining, and other vocalisations).
    • SC_G1_ST2_2_K_004: Describe how different patterns in behaviour teach survival skills.
    Skills
    • SC_G1_ST2_2_S_001: Observe (either first-hand or through media) how parents and offspring behave to help them to survive.
    • SC_G1_ST2_2_S_002: Demonstrate through role play the patterns of behaviour that offspring make and the parent's responses.
    • SC_G1_ST2_2_S_003: Infer from the offspring's signal, the parent's response (e.g. feeding, comforting and protecting the offspring).
    • SC_G1_ST2_2_S_004: Interpret sounds and pictures to make judgements about parent/offspring behaviours.
    • SC_G1_ST2_2_S_005: Communicate their observations of parent-offspring behaviours.
    Attitudes/Values
    • SC_G1_ST2_2_AV_001: Appreciate that parents and offspring work together to survive.
    • SC_G1_ST2_2_AV_002: Show respect for the parents & offspring, observed by treating them with care.
    • SC_G1_ST2_2_AV_003: While making observations students will show concern for safety.
    • SC_G1_ST2_2_AV_004: Appreciate what human parents do for their children to make sure they thrive.
    • SC_G1_ST2_2_AV_005: When conducting practical and group work, display sensitivity and offer assistance to peers who may have physical or learning challenges.
