    Essential Learning Outcomes

    ELO-1
    Sound and Vibrations

Plan and conduct investigations to provide evidence that vibrating materials can make sound and that sound can make materials vibrate. Students explore how sounds are produced, classify sounds by loudness, and investigate the effects of sounds on objects. They learn that sound is a wave and understand the role of vibrations in creating sound.

    Students will:

Students will demonstrate understanding of how to produce sounds, compare and describe sounds as loud, soft, pleasant, or unpleasant, and discuss the effects and uses of sounds in daily life.

    Learning Outcomes:

    Knowledge
    • SC_G1_ST1_1_K_001: Define the terms: Sounds, vibrate, waves, loud, Soft, Sign language
    • SC_G1_ST1_1_K_002: Demonstrate an understanding of how to produce sounds.
    • SC_G1_ST1_1_K_003: Compare and describe sounds produced as (loud, soft, pleasant, unpleasant.
    • SC_G1_ST1_1_K_004: Discuss and identify the effects and uses of sounds in our daily lives.
    • SC_G1_ST1_1_K_005: Show that sound is a wave - like water is a wave.
    Skills
    • SC_G1_ST1_1_S_001: Classify - sounds according to loudness.
    • SC_G1_ST1_1_S_002: Investigate - how sounds are produced and its effects on objects.
    • SC_G1_ST1_1_S_003: Observe - the effects of sounds on objects.
    • SC_G1_ST1_1_S_004: Predict the effects of sounds on objects and the sounds made by different materials.
    • SC_G1_ST1_1_S_005: Communicate effectively the results of sound experiments.
    Attitudes/Values
    • SC_G1_ST1_1_AV_001: Work respectfully with others in exploring and investigating sounds.
    • SC_G1_ST1_1_AV_002: Show respect for persons with hearing or speaking impairment.
    • SC_G1_ST1_1_AV_003: Willingly observe, question, and explore the effects of sounds.
    • SC_G1_ST1_1_AV_004: Show interest and curiosity about sounds and their uses.
    • SC_G1_ST1_1_AV_005: Develop an awareness that loud sounds (noise pollution) affect people and animals e.g., loud music, machinery, firecrackers, and airplanes.

    ELO-2
    Light and Communication

Use tools and materials to design and build devices that use light or sound to solve the problem of communicating over a distance. Students explore how light and sound can travel over distances and identify simple communication devices. They design, build, test, and evaluate communication devices while understanding how people use light and sound to communicate.

    Students will:

Students will identify and describe simple communication devices, design and build a device that uses light or sound to communicate, and describe ways people use devices that utilize light and sound for communication.

    Learning Outcomes:

    Knowledge
    • SC_G1_ST1_2_K_001: Define the terms: light/darkness, Artificial, Natural, Reflect
    • SC_G1_ST1_2_K_002: Give examples of the sources of light.
    • SC_G1_ST1_2_K_003: Identify different light sources in and out of the classroom.
    • SC_G1_ST1_2_K_004: Describe why objects can be seen when illuminated. (Based on reflection of light to eyes.
    • SC_G1_ST1_2_K_005: Understand that the sun is a natural source of light that is a burning sphere.
    • SC_G1_ST1_2_K_006: Understand that the spherical moon reflects the sun's light.
    Skills
    • SC_G1_ST1_2_S_001: Classify light according to their source (natural, artificial).
    • SC_G1_ST1_2_S_002: Investigate - how objects can be seen.
    • SC_G1_ST1_2_S_003: Observe - the effects of light on objects.
    • SC_G1_ST1_2_S_004: Predict the effects of turning on and off the lights in a room, closing and opening eyes, etc.
    • SC_G1_ST1_2_S_005: Communicate ideas about light using new words.
    • SC_G1_ST1_2_S_006: Safe use of candles as a source of light.
    Attitudes/Values
    • SC_G1_ST1_2_AV_001: Willingly participate in, and contribute to, classroom discussions.
    • SC_G1_ST1_2_AV_002: Develop an awareness that light must be present for objects to be seen.
    • SC_G1_ST1_2_AV_003: Appreciate the importance of light e.g. for warning (sirens), safety (lighthouse, traffic lights.).
    • SC_G1_ST1_2_AV_004: Show appreciation for and assist persons with visual impairment.
