    Show and Tell

A classic speaking activity where students share special objects from home, building oral language skills, confidence, and classroom community through structured presentations.

    Activity Overview

Show and Tell is a beloved classroom tradition that develops essential speaking and listening skills. Students bring an object from home and present it to the class, practicing speaking in front of an audience, organizing their thoughts, and using descriptive language. Meanwhile, classmates practice active listening and asking thoughtful questions. This activity builds confidence, vocabulary, and community as students share pieces of their lives.

    1. What is it? "This is my..."
    2. Where did you get it? "I got it from..." or "It came from..."
    3. Who gave it to you? (if applicable) "My grandmother gave it to me."
    4. Why is it special? "I love it because..." or "It's special because..."
    5. Wow fact! Share something interesting about it.

    Speaking Reminders

    • Stand tall and face the audience
    • Speak in a loud, clear voice
    • Hold your object so everyone can see
    • Look at your classmates when speaking
    • Wait for questions at the end

    Implementation Steps

    1Preparation (Day before)

    • Send home note explaining Show and Tell day and theme (if any)
    • Remind students to choose something safe and appropriate
    • Suggest they practice telling about their object at home
    • Prepare a backup object for students who forget
    • Set up a "Show and Tell Chair" or special presentation area

    2Setting Expectations (5 minutes)

    • Review the 5 W's framework on anchor chart
    • Model a Show and Tell presentation with your own object
    • Review listening expectations: eyes on speaker, quiet bodies, save questions for end
    • Practice asking good questions: "What..." "Why..." "How..."
    • Establish turn-taking order

    3Student Presentations (15-20 minutes)

    • Each student takes the "Show and Tell Chair"
    • Holds object and presents using the 5 W's
    • Allow 1-2 minutes per presentation
    • Classmates show active listening behaviors
    • Teacher prompts with questions if student gets stuck

4Questions and Comments (after each presentation)

    • Allow 2-3 questions or comments from classmates
    • Model question starters: "I wonder..." "Can you tell us more about..."
    • Encourage comments: "I like..." "That reminds me of..."
    • Presenter answers questions in complete sentences
    • Celebrate with applause

    5Wrap-Up (3 minutes)

    • Thank all presenters for sharing
    • Highlight something positive from each presentation
    • Preview next Show and Tell day and theme
    • Remind students to place objects safely away
