    My Community Poster

    Students create informational posters about their local community, combining writing, drawing, and design skills to share what makes their neighborhood special.

    Overview

    My Community Poster is a project-based activity that integrates writing and visual representation. Students create informational posters showcasing special places, people, and features of their local community - from the market and church to the beach and school. This activity develops writing skills while building pride in local heritage and understanding of informational text features like headings, labels, and captions.

    Learning Objectives

    • Write informational text about a familiar topic (community)
    • Use text features: headings, labels, captions
    • Organize information logically on a poster
    • Combine writing with visual elements to communicate meaning
    • Present information orally to classmates
    • Develop pride in local community and cultural identity

    Materials Needed

    • Large poster paper or Bristol board (one per student/pair)
    • Markers, crayons, colored pencils
    • Magazines with local images (for cutting out)
    • Glue sticks and scissors
    • Photos of local community (optional)
    • Sample informational posters to display
    • Community brainstorming graphic organizer
    • Sticky notes for planning

    Preparation

    1. Gather sample posters showing text features (headings, labels, captions)
    2. Create a model poster about the school community
    3. Prepare community brainstorming sheets with categories
    4. Collect magazines with Caribbean community images
    5. Take photos of local landmarks if possible
    6. Set up poster-making stations with materials

    Community Categories

    Help students think about their community by exploring these categories:

    Places:
    School, church, market, beach, park, community center, library, health center
    People:
    Teachers, fishermen, farmers, shopkeepers, nurses, police officers, family members
    Activities:
    Fishing, farming, selling, cooking, festivals, sports, church services
    Special Features:
    Rivers, mountains, beaches, historical sites, famous trees, monuments

    Activity Steps

    1. Introduction (8 minutes):
      • Show sample informational posters and discuss features
      • Point out headings, labels, captions, and images
      • Display teacher's model poster about the school
      • Explain that students will create posters about their community
    2. Brainstorming (7 minutes):
      • Students complete community brainstorming sheet
      • Think about: What places are special? Who are important people?
      • What do people do? What makes our community unique?
      • Choose 4-5 items to include on poster
    3. Planning (5 minutes):
      • Sketch poster layout on scrap paper
      • Decide where to place title, images, and text
      • Plan what to write for each section
      • Organize sticky notes on desk to show layout
    4. Creating (20 minutes):
      • Write title at top: "My Community: [Name of Village/Town]"
      • Draw or paste images of community features
      • Add labels to identify places and people
      • Write 1-2 sentences about each item
      • Add a closing sentence: "I love my community because..."
    5. Sharing (5 minutes):
      • Students present posters to a partner or small group
      • Point to different parts while explaining
      • Answer questions from peers
      • Display posters in classroom "Community Gallery"

    Writing Sentence Starters

    • For places: "The ___ is where people..."
    • For people: "___ helps our community by..."
    • For activities: "In my community, we like to..."
    • For special features: "Our community is special because..."
    • For feelings: "My favorite place is ___ because..."

    Text Features Checklist

    My poster includes:

    • A clear title at the top
    • At least 3 pictures or drawings
    • Labels for each picture
    • Sentences that give information
    • Neat writing and coloring

    Differentiation

    For students who need additional support:

    • Provide pre-drawn templates with spaces for images and text
    • Offer sentence frames to complete
    • Allow dictation of sentences for teacher to write
    • Work in pairs with a writing partner
    • Focus on 2-3 community features instead of 4-5

    For students who need additional challenge:

    • Include a map of the community showing locations
    • Add interesting facts researched from family members
    • Compare community to another place in the Caribbean
    • Create a digital poster using simple software
    • Write a persuasive section: "You should visit because..."

    Assessment

    Assess posters for:

    • Includes a clear, descriptive title
    • Contains at least 3 labeled images
    • Provides informational sentences about community
    • Uses text features appropriately (headings, labels, captions)
    • Shows effort in presentation and organization
    • Can present poster orally to others

    Extensions

    • Create a class book: "Our Communities" with one page per student
    • Take a community walk to photograph places for posters
    • Invite community members to view the poster gallery
    • Compare communities from different parts of the island
    • Create a "Welcome to Our Community" brochure for visitors
    • Record students presenting their posters for a digital gallery
    • Connect to social studies: community helpers unit
    • Write thank-you letters to community helpers featured on posters
