    Home Matching Game

    Habitats

    20 minutes
    Small groups of 4-6
    Game

    Learning Objective

    Match animals and plants to their appropriate habitats

    Materials Needed

    • Picture cards of local animals and plants
    • Habitat cards (beach, forest, garden, pond)
    • Game mat or floor space
    • Timer (optional)

    Preparation

    1. 1Create or gather picture cards of familiar local species
    2. 2Make habitat cards with clear pictures
    3. 3Practice the game yourself
    4. 4Set up game area

    Step-by-Step Instructions

    1. 1Place habitat cards on the floor in different areas
    2. 2Give each child animal/plant cards
    3. 3Children take turns matching their cards to correct habitats
    4. 4Discuss each choice: 'Why does the crab live at the beach?'
    5. 5Celebrate correct matches and discuss incorrect ones gently
    6. 6Play multiple rounds with different cards

    Assessment

    • Can the child match most animals/plants to correct habitats?
    • Does the child give reasons for their choices?
    • Can the child learn from mistakes and improve?

    Extensions

    • Play a 'memory' version where cards are turned face down
    • Create new cards with children's drawings
    • Make it a movement game: 'Fly like a bird to the forest'
    • Add more challenging species and habitats

    Teaching Tips

    • Start with obvious matches, then add more challenging ones
    • Encourage peer helping and discussion
    • Make it fun, not stressful
    • Use local species children are familiar with
