Materials Needed

  • Simple drum or rhythm sticks
  • Chant lyrics written on chart paper
  • Pictures of habitats and animals
  • Space for movement

Preparation

  1. 1Create simple chant: 'Goat on the hillside, Fish in the bay, Bird in the tree top, Crab by the way'
  2. 2Practice the rhythm yourself
  3. 3Prepare movements for each animal/habitat
  4. 4Write lyrics where children can see

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1Teach the chant with clapping rhythm
  2. 2Add movements: 'Goat on the hillside' (climb motion)
  3. 3Children suggest new verses with local animals
  4. 4Practice different rhythms - fast, slow, whisper, loud
  5. 5End with everyone doing their favorite animal movement
