Students will understand that the diversity of the world's population is its strength, exploring slavery, East Indian contributions, regional arts and sports, and migration patterns that shape Caribbean identity.
Students will appreciate that the Caribbean has diverse geography with unique challenges and opportunities, understanding global climatic regions and human adaptation across different environments.
Students will appreciate that complex global problems require international cooperation to make choices for the future, examining national identity, international organizations, and media literacy.
Students will recognize how regional and international movement of goods, people, and services shapes Caribbean society through consumer awareness, tourism, and sustainable development.
Understanding global diversity and Caribbean heritage
Students explore the end of slavery and its abolition, East Indian contributions to Caribbean culture, how regional arts and sports foster Caribbean interactions, and migration patterns that shape societies. They develop understanding of how diversity strengthens communities and how cultural exchanges shape identity.
Exploring global geography and environmental adaptation
Students investigate world continents and oceans, global climatic regions including tropical, temperate, and polar zones, human adaptation to diverse environments through housing, clothing, and agriculture, and the impacts of extreme weather conditions on communities worldwide.
Understanding global citizenship and democratic participation
Students examine national identity and what shapes it, international organizations like WHO, UNICEF, and FAO, major social issues affecting the Eastern Caribbean, the electoral process and democratic rights, and media literacy including identifying bias and fake news.
Understanding global economics and sustainable development
Students analyze consumer rights and responsibilities, tourism benefits and challenges, sustainable community development through positive international relations, resource preservation and conservation, and how different economic sectors provide employment opportunities globally and locally.
The Grade 6 Social Studies curriculum, titled "The Caribbean in the World," provides students with a comprehensive understanding of how the Caribbean region connects to and participates in the global community. Students develop critical thinking skills while exploring themes of diversity, adaptation, cooperation, and sustainable development.
This curriculum explores how the diversity of the world's population is its strength, with particular attention to understanding the powerful role of slavery in shaping Caribbean society, the origins and contributions of East Indian peoples to Caribbean economy and culture, how migration has shaped Caribbean society, and how regional arts and sports foster regional interactions.
Through inquiry-based learning, collaborative projects, and real-world connections, students examine complex global problems and understand the importance of international cooperation. They explore how historical events shape present realities, how geography influences human adaptation, how citizens participate in democratic processes, and how economic decisions impact local and global communities.
